Exchange Relationships and Characteristics

The various stock exchanges in Canada are not independent. The largest parent company is the TMX group. Under this umbrella many exchanges are managed such as: the Toronto Stock Exchange, the TSX Venture Exchange, the NGX, the MX and the NEX.

Nasdaq Canada is one of the international legs of the Nasdaq exchange. This exchange includes many companies in the technology, pharmaceutical, consumer, and multimedia industries.

The Montreal Exchange claims to be the oldest in Canada. The purpose of the MX is to trade derivatives such as options on equities, ETF’s, USD currency, interest rates, energy and indices.

The Canadian National Stock Exchange is the re-branded version of the CNQ. The CNSX is an alternative marketplace for new and emerging companies as well as very small businesses with micro capitalization. The CNSX is fully automated without a physical trading floor. The Canadian National Stock Exchange also maintains the Pure Trading service for electronic trading.

The TSX Venture is for new and emerging companies. The closest comparison some would make is to the CNSX. The standards are set lower than for those listing on the Toronto Stock Exchange. The former Vancouver Stock Exchange and the Alberta Stock Exchange were merged into what is now the TSX Venture.

The NEX is a branch of the TSX Venture for inactive companies or businesses operating at very low levels. If a company has fallen below the TSX Venture standards it can be traded on the NEX board.
